Rainy Day Jobs and Bird Song

Since MeMa has no immune system along with this second wave of Covid we had to tell our sons that we will be passing on family gatherings during the holidays. It is a sad but necessary decision in order to keep their mother safe. I could see the heartache in my lovely wife’s face as she talked on the phone to our eldest son. I immediately started thinking of ways to brighten her days. Her little canary “Mickey" had passed  a couple of days after her cancer diagnosis and at the time I just cleaned out his cage put it in the attic. I told her we would take a canary break with all the chemo and a hospital stay coming her way. We really missed the bird song filling the sunroom so this last Friday we visited a nice couple who raise canaries as a hobby. They were very proud their birds and enjoyed showing us around. MeMa had five birds to choose from and decided on a very nice red factor cross. When we got him home I asked MeMa what she was going to name her new bird? She said since it was Friday the 13th his name has to be Jason.
I checked, no face mask and he wasn’t hiding a big carving knife.

Since the weather had turned to cold heavy rain, we busied ourselves with indoor projects. I cleaned and packaged zinnia seeds.

MeMa worked on embroidery.

The weather may have been cold and nasty but the room was once again filled with bird song.

  1. Animals can be the best therapy. You are wise to avoid as many people as possible at the moment. I'm not really a people person myself but I can imagine that if you are these times have been very hard but you need to look after yourself.

    1. The canary has been just what she needed. It seems the only time he is not singing is when he is eating.

  2. How lovely! A singing canary sounds like a wonderful distraction for Mema. There will be other holidays, and just this morning there was news of another Covid vaccine that should be widely available by the start of summer! We just have to keep safe in the meantime.

  3. We have made our decision this week not to hold a family gathering for Thanksgiving this year, just the two of us, and every man for himself. Hopefully next year will be better. Sweet little canary, I'm sure MeMa will enjoy his singing.

  4. It is great that you have another bird. I had to google the relationship between Jason and Friday 13th. Glad MeMa is doing well but I am sure staying isolated is the best course.

  5. I know this is a hard holiday for you (and so many), but what a wonderful gift for you both to have the song of a sweet canary once again - And the seeds to plant in the spring will bring a smile too. I love zinnias but didn't plant any this year, and I missed them.

And if we miss one another next week, I'm sending you and MeMa, my best and warmest wishes from my house to yours, for a peaceful, and very Happy Thanksgiving.

  7. Your very own birdsong must be a great spirit lifter, what a good decision! Like you, we shall be having the quietest Christmas ever. We are playing the long game and keeping safe until the promised vaccines are on offer. Hopefully we shall be able to celebrate as a family round about Easter time. Meanwhile, thank goodness for FaceTime!
